Why Install a Dedicated Home EV Charger?
Plugging your EV into a standard household powerpoint might work in a pinch, but it’s slow, not to mention the strain it puts on your home’s wiring. A dedicated EV charger, on the other hand, is purpose-built for the job.
Here’s why homeowners across the South West are making the upgrade:

Faster Charging
A dedicated home charger can charge your EV up to 10 times faster than a standard powerpoint, meaning a full charge overnight rather than multiple days.

Safer for Your Home
Purpose-built EV chargers are designed to handle sustained high loads safely. Relying on a standard outlet for daily charging puts unnecessary stress on your home’s wiring and can create a fire risk over time.

Convenience
Charge at home while you sleep and wake up to a full battery every morning. No detours to public charging stations.

Increases Property Appeal
A hardwired home charger is an attractive feature for any future buyer, especially as EV uptake continues to grow across WA.

Smart Features
Many modern EV chargers include scheduling, energy monitoring, and integration with home solar systems, so you can charge when your panels are producing and keep running costs down.

Frequently Asked Questions
In most cases, no council approval is required for a standard home EV charger installation. However, the work must be carried out by a licensed electrician and a certificate of compliance must be issued on completion. Any electrician who tells you otherwise is worth avoiding. NIXON handles all compliance paperwork as part of every installation
Technically yes, but it’s not recommended for regular use. A standard powerpoint delivers a very slow charge and isn’t designed to handle the sustained load of nightly EV charging. A dedicated charger is safer, faster, and the right long-term solution.
It depends on the age of your home and what’s already running off your board. Many homes, particularly those built before 2000, don’t have the spare capacity to safely support an EV charger without an upgrade. We assess this during your site visit and let you know upfront before any work begins.
Single-phase chargers are the standard option for most homes and will suit the majority of EV owners — they typically deliver a full charge overnight. Three-phase chargers charge faster and are worth considering if you have a larger battery EV, drive high kilometres daily, or your home already has three-phase power connected. We’ll recommend the right option based on your vehicle and usage.
Yes. With the right setup, you can schedule your EV to charge during the day, when your solar panels are generating power, significantly reducing your running costs. If you have an existing solar or battery system, let us know when you enquire, and we’ll make sure the installation is set up to work with it.
The cost varies depending on the charger itself, the length of the cable run, and whether your switchboard needs any work beforehand. We provide upfront quotes so you know exactly what you’re paying before we start. There’ll be no bill shock when our work’s done.
